Roses market review week 4, 2018.
We discussed with Ishai, head of rose, department the developments in the Month of January and valentine forecast
The last years in the period of January the roses market became better, and this year was even higher prices than the past. He declares a few reasons for this phenomenon.
- The night’s temperatures in Kenya, especially in the high altitude farms, were cold and the production was lower. In addition more growers are targeting the flush production for Valentine and the Women’s Day, so you miss flowers on this period.
- In Ethiopia the night’s temperatures on this period are extremely low and the supply to the market is very small.
- Changing weather in Europe, higher temperatures, cause better market conditions, open market and higher demand.
- The economic in Europe is in bloom, and people spend more money on flowers.
- Poland has become one of the biggest flower consumers in Europe, on the third weekend of January, it was Grandmother Day in Poland ands it becomes more significant sales day every year.
- Good varieties generation with better vase life, cause earlier purchase for valentine (already on week 4) .This phenomena is especially noticeable in the East of Europe and the out of the European market segment Buyers also promote the roses earlier for the valentine.
Valentine
Ishai feels high demand for the valentine on the market. Some big direct deals already closed, and more flowers are selling out of Europe, this cause higher demand in the main flowers market.
Ethiopia will loose big part of the supply for valentine because of extreme cold weather. In Ecuador is also cold and it is not sure that all production will reach the valentine.
The 14th of February falls this year on Wednesday and it is advantage and gives more sales days, also 2 days after the weekend.
The market is able to pay extra for high quality. Growers must do all they can in order to bring fresh flowers, and to give extra attention for the whole post harvest process.
We are all aware that the freight capacity is not enough. You have to make all efforts to send the flowers immediately and not to keep any stock in the farm.
